Australia has a unique way of deciding who can move here to work and live. This system is called the points-based immigration system. It helps the Australian government select the best-skilled workers who can contribute to the country’s economy. In this article, we will explain how this system works in simple terms.

What is the Points-Based Immigration System?

The points-based immigration system is a method that awards points to applicants based on their skills, experience, and other factors. The more points you have, the better your chances of getting an Australian visa. This system is primarily used for General Skilled Migration visas.

Types of Visas That Use the Points System

Several GSM visas use the points-based system. These include:

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

  • For skilled workers who are not sponsored by a State/Territory or family member.
  • This is a permanent visa, allowing you to live and work anywhere in Australia.

Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)

Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)

  • For skilled workers who are nominated by an Australian State or Territory government.
  • This is also a permanent visa, with the commitment of living and working in the nominating state.

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491)

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491)

  • For skilled workers nominated by an Australian State or Territory government or eligible family member to live and work in regional areas of Australia.
  • This is a provisional visa, requiring the holder to live, work, and study in regional Australia.
  • There is a pathway to convert to permanent residency after 3 years.

How Do You Score Points?

You can score points in several categories. Here are some of the main factors that can help you earn points:

Age

  • If you are between 25 and 32 years old, you score the most points.
  • Points decrease for those outside this age range.

English Language Skills

  • You can earn points for your English proficiency.
  • Higher test scores in exams like IELTS or PTE give you more points.

Work Experience

  • Points are awarded for years of skilled work experience.
  • You can score more points for working in Australia compared to other countries.

Education

  • Having a degree or diploma can earn you points.
  • Points are given based on the level of education and whether your qualification is recognized in Australia.

Other Factors

  • You can also earn points for other reasons, such as:
  • Studying in Australia
  • Being a qualified translator or interpreter
  • Being nominated by a state or territory government
  • Having a partner with Competent English

How Many Points Do You Need?

To be eligible for a skilled visa you typically need at least 65 points. However, the points required can vary depending on the visa type and the number of applicants in that category. Sometimes, the required points can be higher because of competition for certain occupations.

How to Apply
