The Tasmanian Government has announced the opening of its 2025 Skilled Migration State Nomination Program, set to officially launch in October 2025. This program provides skilled professionals a valuable opportunity to secure state nomination — a key step toward obtaining an Australian skilled visa.
It’s important to note that state nomination and visa applications are separate processes. While the Tasmanian Government assesses your application for nomination, the Department of Home Affairs handles the visa application itself.
How to Apply
Applicants must first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the Department of Home Affairs’ SkillSelect system. This initial step determines whether you meet the basic eligibility criteria for a skilled migration visa.
Once your EOI is complete, you can register your interest for Tasmanian nomination via the Migration Tasmania Gateway. From there, the most competitive candidates will be invited to apply.
Applicants are encouraged to consult with a registered migration agent for tailored guidance.
Program Updates and Key Changes
In preparation for the new program year, Migration Tasmania has made several updates designed to enhance transparency and streamline the process. These include:
- Updated eligibility criteria and priority attributes
- A revised Registration of Interest (ROI) ranking system
- Adjusted income thresholds to reflect current Australian earnings
- New policy guidance with clearer definitions and exclusions
Additionally, the nomination service fee has increased to $370 (or $407 including GST). There remains no fee to submit a Registration of Interest.
Candidates who lodged an ROI within the past six months are encouraged to review the updated ranking criteria, as these changes may significantly improve their selection chances.
New ROI Scoring and Pass System
Tasmania’s ROI now uses a colour-coded scoring system to determine nomination priority:
-
Gold Pass (1,000+ points) – Immediate eligibility to apply for nomination
-
Green Pass (250+ points) – Eligible for invitation within six months
-
Orange Pass (below 250 points) – May be invited depending on available nomination places
Some “Orange Plus” attributes (worth 25 points or more) are given special consideration within the orange category.
Priority weighting will favour Graduate and Established Resident pathways, reflecting Tasmania’s goal of retaining skilled residents and attracting younger workers. All ROIs in the overseas applicant pathways will automatically receive a Gold Pass.
The Tasmanian Business Operator (TBO) pathway does not include green or gold priority attributes.
What This Means for Applicants
These updates are aimed at creating a more transparent, efficient nomination process and ensuring Tasmania continues to attract the right mix of skills to support its economic growth.
If you’re considering applying for Tasmanian state nomination, now is the perfect time to prepare your documents and review your eligibility.
