The Albanese Government has confirmed that the 2025–26 Permanent Migration Program will remain steady at 185,000 places, consistent with the 2024–25 program. This decision follows consultation with states and territories, which strongly supported maintaining both the size and the skilled migration focus of the program.

While the announcement comes at a time of national debate about migration, the government has reinforced that permanent migration continues to deliver long-term benefits to Australia’s economy and communities. Skilled migrants play a vital role in addressing workforce shortages, strengthening industries, and supporting future growth.

Although migration numbers have been the subject of criticism following the post-pandemic surge, net overseas migration has already begun to ease, returning closer to pre-pandemic levels. Importantly, the permanent migration program primarily grants visas to people already living in Australia, meaning it does not directly influence net migration figures.

The Department of Home Affairs has been processing visas at last year’s level, ensuring no disruption to applicants. The distribution between skilled and family visas will remain unchanged, keeping the program balanced and stable.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to a fair and sustainable migration system, one that continues to meet Australia’s economic needs while supporting social stability. Migration has always been central to the Australian story, enriching our communities, strengthening our workforce, and ensuring we remain globally competitive.
